Bluebonnet Season in Texas Hill Country

5 minutes read Feb 17,2021
Bluebonnet Season in Texas Hill Country

Delicate and vibrant, the bluebonnet is the iconic Texas state flower. Every spring, bluebonnets pop up throughout the state, but are especially abundant in Texas Hill Country. Here, bluebonnet season begins as early as March, peaks in April, and tapers off in May.

With numerous resorts around Hill Country, we're highlighting some of the region's best spots to see bluebonnets. Book a stay today, take a Texas vacation, and enjoy the state's magnificent spring wildflowers!

Best Spots to See Bluebonnets in Hill Country

Devil's Backbone Overlook

A beloved rise in Texas Hill Country, Devil's Backbone is a scenic overlook that's ideal for picnicking. Nestled 25 miles north of Hill Country Cottage and RV Resort, Devil's Backbone offers views for miles. Stop by for a picnic and take in the fields of bluebonnets during spring.

Willow City Loop

Sitting west of Austin and north of San Antonio, Willow City Loop is the best place for a wildflower drive. Endless fields of flowers are on full display during bluebonnet season, making this an incredibly scenic drive. Do note, though, that the fields are on private property. You can drive through, but the owners request that you don't stop, park, or enter the fields.

Wildseed Farms

Wildseed Farms has been growing wildflowers for more than 35 years, and the bluebonnets always put on a show. With 200 acres of fields and trails, Wildseed Farms might be the single best place to visit during bluebonnet season. It's in Fredericksburg, which is a bit of a drive, but the wildflowers are well worth the trip. Plus, the town is charming too!

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

In southeast Austin is the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Founded by the former first lady, the center features sprawling botanic gardens with a focus on flowers. Bluebonnets are just the start, and there are many more species to explore as you walk through the gardens and arboretum.

Note that, for the time being, the Wildflower Center is open by reservation only. You can book your time slot on their website linked above.

Burnet, TX

The small town of Burnet, Texas is known for its annual Bluebonnet Festival. Each year, the town welcomes visitors during the second week of April to see the gorgeous blooms. Along with the wildflowers, the festival features music, food, arts and craft vendors, and many outdoor activities.

Marble Falls, TX

Situated one hour northwest of Austin, Marble Falls is a charming town during bluebonnet season. There a couple spots to visit around this enchanting Western locale. First, the Bluebonnet House is a great photo spot along Highway 281 as you head north out of Marble Falls. It is private property, so drive by and don't intrude.

Another great spot is Turkey Bend Recreation Area. Nestled along the Colorado River between Austin and Marble Falls, Turkey Bend has well-tended fields of bluebonnets. Be sure to visit for a rustic Texas experience.

Cottage at Hill Country Cottage and RV Resort in New Braunfels TX

Camp Nearby to Experience Bluebonnet Season

Your best bet for experiencing bluebonnet season is at Hill Country Cottage and RV Resort in New Braunfels. With a stunning selection of vacation cottages, Hill Country places you close to the action and affords many amenities.

Further north in Austin are La Hacienda RV Resort and Austin Lone Star RV Resort. These two resorts are closer to Marble Falls and Burnet, plus you'll have access to Austin's city attractions. Down south, you'll find Blazing Star RV Resort and Traveler's World RV Resort in San Antonio. While close to the Tex-Mex attractions of the city, these San Antonio resorts are also just a short drive away from Hill Country attractions.
