Saddle Up at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo

5 minutes read Feb 01,2018
Saddle Up at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo

Settled in the Southwest, San Antonio embodies the best of the Lone Star State, including the time-honored tradition of Texas rodeo entertainment. In fact, the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo is one of the city's biggest attractions, drawing over two million visitors to this annual event each year. The show began in 1950 and was an instant success, boasting over 250,000 attendants in its first year. Since then, the show has grown in popularity and now offers a wide variety of events, ranging from horse shows to a full-fledged carnival. This year, the show spans over two weeks, running from February 18-25, and continues to offer unique daily events and wholesome family entertainment every day.

To begin your visit, watch as Swifty Swine and his friend's dash towards the finish line at the pig races to reach the coveted Oreo treat waiting for them on a silver platter. Or experience something a little different at the open petting zoo, where the animals and the public mingle without barriers. Kids can get an educational experience as they learn more about milk production and products at the Dairy Center, where creamy, frozen treats like yogurt and milkshakes are whipped up and sold to visitors after the presentation. Need another kid-friendly activity? Try the Cowboy Boot Camp, which offers 10 hands-on activity stations, such as gold panning, cow milking, face painting, and much more.

There's always fun to be found while watching the calf scramble, a traditional event where teens involved in 4-H enter the arena with a herd of animals to halter and coax the animals into a designated area. See the finest among farm animals at the livestock show, where you'll witness hulking beef cattle, prancing goats, and proud turkeys strutting their stuff. While at the event, be sure to stop by one of the horse shows, where gleaming steeds work with their owners to perform acrobatic tricks and maneuvers.

The rodeo is the highlight of event and takes place over 18 days in a tournament format. The first 15 performances will create the brackets, which will determine the contestants who advance to the two semifinals. The rodeo culminates in the final performance, where the contestant winning the most money will be crowned as the champion!

Concerts are a key feature of the Stock Show and Rodeo, with big names like Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley, and the Goo Goo Dolls performing at this year's show. Food vendors will be in abundance, ranging from traditional Southwest fare at the Van de Walle Fajita Corral to a wide range of options at the expansive food court. Don't forget to browse around! Over 250 themed retailers will showcase their products, including local and artisan items.

As you plan your visit to this incredible event, you'll be in search of a place to stay. If you're looking to remain close to downtown, snag a spot at Traveler's World RV Resort, which is just 15 minutes from the Riverwalk, the Alamo, and San Antonio's bustling business district. With full hookups, Internet, and an on-site convenience store, you have all the modern amenities you can ask for.

Hoping to visit SeaWorld during your stay? Then Blazing Star RV Resort is the place for you! Located just around the corner from the aquatic amusement park, Blazing Star offers the pinnacle of fun in a serene Texas setting. Cool off in the lushly-landscaped pool area and let kids enjoy a playground while the weather's nice, or head indoors to the arcade for a bit of video game fun.

And we can't forget about the Texas Hill Country, where just 30 minutes north of San Antonio lies a country cottage getaway at Hill Country Cottage and RV Resort in charming New Braunfels.

Whether you're swinging through for the Stock Show or staying with Sun as a seasonal guest, you're sure to have a wonderful time in San Antonio. Book your stay today!
