A weekend in Paso Robles, California? Wine not! Rolling hills and coastal breezes surround this region of the central coast, creating ideal conditions that serve as a testament to the state's reputation for wine. With over 200 wineries in the Paso Robles area, there's no doubt that it's a must-visit destination for wine connoisseurs.
To celebrate its offerings, Paso Robles holds multiple festivals, with vendors showing off their finest creations. Two of these events are coming up soon, read on to learn more and start planning your stay today!
The heritage variety of grape in Paso Robles is Zinfandel, a red grape that originated in Croatia, but has flourished in California wine country. Though Zinfandel is a red grape, you can find it in both red wines that use the grape skin and white (blush pink) varieties that remove the grape skin after crushing.
The main event takes place on March 16, when a panel of winemakers will hold a ticketed seminar focused exclusively on Zinfandels. To carry on the fun, guests can purchase a combo ticket that includes access to the seminar and the Z After Party. This post-seminar gathering takes place throughout downtown Paso Robles, with over 20 wineries offering Zinfandel tastings, paired with locally made desserts and live music.
Local wineries also hold events of their own. SummerWood Winery is holding Zin and chocolate pairings throughout the weekend, and Croad Vineyards will be hosting extensive tastings with grilled sausages on Friday afternoon. As an alternative to Friday's seminar, you can purchase tickets to a gourmet dinner at Castoro Cellars, or keep things light at August Ridge Vineyards, where a traditional Italian dinner will be offered with a screening of a classic Spaghetti Western movie.
Proudly going into its 36th year, Paso Robles Wine Festival is a one-stop shop for all the best wines from the region. On Saturday, May 19, more than 70 wineries will gather in City Park during the Grand Tasting event. During the festival, you'll have the opportunity to sample wines by regional style, accompanied by carefully selected food bites for pairing.
For two days of non-stop fun, consider purchasing the combo ticket for the Grand Tasting and RESERVE event. Taking place on Friday, May 18, RESERVE will feature the same 70+ wineries, each offering two of their very best wines. An array of local restaurants will also be in attendance, serving incredible eats that you can enjoy with live music as the sun sets over City Park.
The region's wineries will again be offering events of their own. McPrice Meyers will be open daily from 11-5, pouring Rhône wines, along with select library wines. On Friday at Niner Wine Estates, a pop-up Italian dinner will be served family-style along with 2014 Silhouette due Coeur and 2013 Sangiovese wine. Eberle Winery is boasting an array of new releases at its winery on Saturday, along with complimentary wood-fired pizza, live music, and cave tours. Best of all, Eberle Winery is a dog-friendly destination, so you can bring Fido along to the festivities!
