Keep Your Cool This Summer

Keep Your Cool This Summer

When you think of camping, you think of summer – the two have always gone hand-in-hand. Those long, hot summer days can present a challenge to keep yourself cool in an environment where there is little or no air conditioning available. Here are a few ways to beat the heat during your next camping trip:

1.   Stay Hydrated

Beat the heat with a cool bottle of water – the relief is immediate and the effects will last up to an hour or more. Plus, your body will feel cooler if you are hydrated. Tip: Freezing water, fruit juice or athletic drinks before you go camping and storing them in an ice chest with ice will keep your drinks cool even on the hottest day.

2.   Take a Hike

Deeper forested areas are nature's air conditioning and it's been proven that temperatures are cooler in the shade than in the sun. So take advantage of the shade! Tip: Avoid hiking or strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day; this is the quickest way to make yourself sick and run the risk of dehydration.

3.   Make a Splash

Any body of water, whether it be a lake, swimming pool or stream are great ways to cool off on a hot summer day. Not only do you stay cool, it's a great time too! Tip: Soaking a shirt in cool or even lukewarm water is a good substitute if you don't have any bodies of water near you.

4.   Dress for the Occasion

Loose, light-colored clothing, sandals or mesh shoes and wide brimmed hats are good choices that will help keep you cool and comfortable while shielding your skin from the sun. Tip: Where loosely-woven natural fabrics like cotton, silk or linen and avoid dark colors that absorb the sun's heat and stay warmer longer.

5.   Catch Some Condensation

Wrap water bottles or your ice chest in bandanas or paper towels to create a cool wipe for your face, wrist, back of your neck. Tip: Ice packs are another alternative you can try or run cold water over your pulse.

Camping in the great outdoors is always a great time when you're a happy camper. Keeping these tips in mind during your next adventure can ensure that you and your loved ones stay safe and comfortable.
