Outdoor Activities on the Gulf Shores of Alabama

Alabama's Gulf Shores are filled to the gills with exciting things to do. But narrowing the list is difficult. That's why we've picked nine of the best activities for families and travelers. And best of all, they're within easy reach of Sun Outdoors Orange Beach , our luxury camping destination in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Come visit, stay a while, and explore all that the Gulf Coast has to offer!

Orange Beach Alabama

9 Things to Do on Alabama's Gulf Shores

1. Orange Beach

A renowned water sports destination, Orange Beach, Alabama is a great Gulf Coast spot. The town's signature beach features soft sand and spectacular waves.

One hotspot in town is The Wharf, a lively shopping area with an amphitheater for live music and shows. You can also check out the Indian & Sea Museum for a bit of history. As you explore the city, look for fresh seafood, relaxed beach shops, and family fun zones.

2. Gulf State Park

Visiting Gulf State Park is one of the best things to do on Alabama's Gulf Shores. The park has two miles of beaches and a wide variety of walking and biking trails. Plus, the waters are fantastic for paddling a kayak or canoe.

Some other things to check out include the butterfly garden, fishing pier, and nature center.

3. Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is one of the best zoos in the South. It's home to more than 600 animals including lemurs, kangaroos, anteaters, and lions.

Most notable are the zoo's Animal Encounters. All ages can check out these educational programs. Get ready, you'll be able to meet some of your favorite critters up close!

4. City of Gulf Shores Wetlands Park

If it isn't clear yet, Alabama's Gulf Shores have top-notch things to do outdoors. The city of Gulf Shores is home to a great Wetlands Park near the coast. The reserve features walking and hiking trails, along with a fishing pond, pier, benches, and gazebos.

In short, it's the perfect place to unplug and unwind.

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge

5. Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge occupies more than 7,000 acres on the Fort Morgan Peninsula. Four trails run through the refuge, offering a chance to see all sorts of wildlife. The area is known as a birding hotspot and is home to alligators, armadillos, bobcats, and more. You can also go fishing and boating in select spots.

6. Adventure Island

Lots of family fun awaits at Adventure Island in Orange Beach, Alabama. This amusement park is packed with activities. Race go-karts, get soaked with bumper boats, play a game of mini golf, or take aim in laser tag. Adventure Island has great activities for all ages!

7. Flora-Bama Lounge & Oyster Bar

Known as America's "last great roadhouse," Flora-Bama Lounge & Oyster Bar is a Southern treat. This coastal delight opened in 1964 and added pieces as traffic from the highway grew. Now, it's a fixture that rides the Florida-Alabama state line.

While the building is special, the food is even better. Come try fried shrimp and fish that's fresh from the Gulf. And if you're up for it, give the famous oysters a try. It's the only way to have the true Gulf Coast experience.

8. Orange Beach Waterfront Park

Situated on Wolf Bay, the Orange Beach Waterfront Park is a great family spot. You'll first notice the huge fishing pier extending over the water. But there's more to the park! A dedicated kids area has swings, slides, and jungle gyms. And for getting active, there are plenty of paved walking paths with the picture-perfect backdrop of Wolf Bay.

Kayaking With Dolphin

9. Dolphin & Wildlife Kayak Experience

Seeing things from the shore is cool but there's no substitute for hitting the water. Wild Native Tours will take you out in a kayak to see the wildlife up close. The experience is thrilling and educational and you may spot bottlenose dolphins, ospreys, herons, pelicans, and more. Just don't forget to pack sunscreen!
