There are too many celebrations to cover here so we offer a just a few of the varied opportunities. Let's start with the first modern tradition of Christmas, which is shopping, and move on to other more eclectic excursions.
A Christmas Affair: The Junior League of Austin holds a series of shopping and holiday activities over a 5 day period before Thanksgiving, from November 19 - 23. All events are held at the Palmer Events Center. For the kids, it's breakfast with Santa, decorating gingerbread houses, and rocking' around the Christmas tree with tunes from The Biscuit Brothers. Shop at over 200 outlets on market days with this year's theme: New York With an Austin Flair. Special shopping parties include a black tie auction and Breakfast at Tiffany's Brunch. Check the web-site for event dates and details.
Austin Trail of Lights: More than a light show, this experience features about 30 lighted displays including holiday characters in lights. Entertainment and Austin's finest food trailers are right down Armadillo Alley. Photo ops are everywhere, and of course several merchants offer stocking stuffers and last-minute gift options. Now in its 50th year, this walk through holiday adventure is free Mon. - Thurs., but costs $3 Fri. - Sun. Zip passes are available, and parking costs vary.
39th Annual Armadillo Christmas Bazaar: Uniquely Texan, this event dazzles with art and legendary musicians, along with holiday shopping. From fine arts and distinctive artisan crafts to modestly-priced stocking stuffers, 160 local and nationally acclaimed artists display their wares that "stimulate your senses with enticing art that you can see, smell, touch, taste and hear." More than 28 musicians will perform, including the original "Redneck Mother," Ray Wylie Hubbard. Experience Christmas Austin-style from Dec. 16 - 24, at the Palmer Events Center.
