Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park is a beautiful, peaceful valley replete with open meadows and large oaks. The standout feature of the park is a preserved outcropping of marbleized limestone with 1,185 mortar holes, with recreated tipis right next door.
The park also features the Chaw'se Regional Indian Museum, a depository that showcases the crafts of the region's Native American tribes, including basketry, jewelry, arrow points, and feather regalia. A reconstructed Miwok Village is also on-site, as well as two short nature trails that wind around the attractions of the park. The park is home to a wide array of wildlife such as deer, squirrels, rabbits, and several species of birds. More than that, Indian Grinding Rock is a great place for picnicking and relaxing amid a hushed silence that's not easy to find in the modern world.
Amazing wonders of the underground world are waiting to be discovered at Black Chasm Cavern. Stalagmites and stalactites hang from the ceiling and rise from the floor, but the stars of this cavern are the helictites. These rare and funky formations grow in every direction, seeming to defy gravity with their twisted shapes that remind many visitors of real and fictional creatures.
Outside of the cavern, the Zen Garden is home to natural marble monoliths that were discovered as a result of hydraulic mining during the California Gold Rush. Moss covers these ancient rocks, lending an air of mystery and fantasy to this stunning and fragile landmark in Amador County.
