5 Summer Spots in the Niagara Region

Situated between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie is the beautiful Niagara region. While the world-famous waterfalls steal the spotlight, there's plenty more to see. With beaches, safaris, and more, the list of things to do in Niagara is nearly endless.

Even though there are many things to do in Niagara, we've narrowed the list to five of our favorites. Make sure you have a pen and paper handy. You'll want to plan your trip immediately!

Crystal Beach Ontario

5 Things to Do in Niagara, Ontario

1. Crystal Beach

With clear waters and soft sand, Crystal Beach is a fan favorite in Fort Erie. There are two good places to explore the water. Bay Beach is a classic sandy beach, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Nearby is Crystal Beach Waterfront Park, which features a playground, green space, and a boat launch. Either park is great, so take your pick.

Old Fort Erie

2. Old Fort Erie

We know time machines don't exist. But Old Fort Erie comes pretty close. Built in 1764, the fort later played a pivotal role in the War of 1812. It served as a flashpoint in the conflict and was occupied by British and American troops at various times.

Today, Old Fort Erie is one of the best things to do in Niagara. The fort remains largely intact, with great exhibits detailing its history. Daily tours will give you a deeper dive and take you to all the best spots in the fort. Plus, you can attend one of the lively reenactments.

3. Downtown Port Colborne

Situated along the Welland Canal, Port Colborne is a charming Canadian town. The historic Canal District is full of unique shops and diverse restaurants. Take a walk along West Street and enjoy the architecture. Or head to H.H. Knoll Park and spend some time by the water.

Port Colborne is also home to an event that's one of the best things to do in Niagara. Canal Days Marine Heritage Festival takes place each year over the Civic Holiday weekend at the beginning of August. It's full of heritage ships, festival food, kid's entertainment, and more.

Wainfleet Wetlands Conservation

4. Wainfleet Wetlands Conservation

Once upon a time, Wainfleet Wetlands Conservation was a clay and limestone quarry. Flash forward to the present and it's one of the best spots in Ontario to see fossils. Imprints of ancient remains date more than 300 million years into the past!

Wainfleet Wetlands Conservation is fairly rustic. To explore the area, hike along the Quarry Walking Trail. Or follow the Gord Harry Conservation Trail along the northern edge of the wetlands. There are also off-trail spots for bird and wildlife watching.

Giraffes Safari Niagara

5. Safari Niagara

Located in Stevensville is Safari Niagara. This wild attraction is full of exotic animals, including tigers, giraffes, rhinos, and chimpanzees. In fact, there are more than 1000 native and exotic animals at the 150-acre outdoor zoo.

There are several ways to explore Safari Niagara. You can take a walking tour or hop on a guided tram ride. There are also educational presentations, behind-the-scenes tours, and an adventure day camp for kids.   If you're looking for the best things to do in Niagara, you now have five great activities to try. Even better, they're all within striking distance of Sherkston Shores Beach Resort and Pleasant Beach Campground. Visit our stunning resort on the shores of Lake Erie and explore near Niagara Falls today.
