A Parent's Guide to Traveling with Kids

A Parent's Guide to Traveling with Kids

As any parent can attest, traveling with kids is tricky business. There are a lot of considerations and even if you remember them, things can still go wrong. But there's no doubt that it helps to be prepared. And that's why we're bringing you five tips for traveling with kids. Have fun and enjoy your vacation!

Road Trip

5 Tips for Traveling with Kids

1. Getting There

First things first, you need to look at your mode of travel. If you're driving, make sure you get a maintenance check before hitting the road. No parent wants to be stuck on the side of the road when traveling with kids.

If you're flying, there are more considerations. For one, make sure you pack according to the airline restrictions. That means no liquids greater than three ounces, and they must fit in a one-quart bag for each traveler. Additionally, you'll need to check your luggage weight, the carry-on rules, and the security guidelines. And that's on top of keeping kids calm during the flight!

In some cases, you might be able to take a train. This takes longer than flying but removes most of the stress. You'll have more space to spread out, fewer packing restrictions, and no security lines. See if you can take an Amtrak train on your next trip!

2. What to Pack

Packing might be the most important part of the trip. If you forget an essential item, traveling with kids can be a hairy situation. It's wise to plan a packing list at least three days in advance. Write this out and check items off as you pack. Using this list rather than relying on memory will save you strife.

What are some things you might pack for traveling with kids? Here's a very abbreviated list:

  • Clothing, including swimwear
  • Toiletries and medication
  • Healthy snacks
  • Reusable water bottles
  • Travel pillow(s)
  • Sweaters, hoodies, or light jackets
  • Headphones
  • Tablet with pre-downloaded movies, books, or games

If you're looking to get away from it all, look at our post on unplugging from technology while camping. It offers suggestions on activities and alternative items to pack.

3. Tent, RV, or Vacation Rental

An important question is which way you'll choose to stay. Tents offer an experience under the stars but aren't always the best for camping with kids. If you opt for a tent site, make sure your kids have experience with tent camping, like in the backyard, before taking your trip.

RVs are a great way to take the family camping. They offer some of the amenities of home, making it easier for kids to acclimate. They also provide a bit more space and privacy for families.

You don't need an RV for a comfortable experience, though. You can also try a vacation rental. Many of our resorts offer cabins and cottages in all shapes and sizes. If you want to make a memory, check out our unique rentals including yurts, treehouses, tipis, and beyond!

4. Amenities for Kids

Be sure to check your resort's amenities before your trip. While our all age resorts are kid friendly, some feature a selection of amenities gathered just for kiddos. For example, Sherkston Shores Beach Resort has three water slides, an arcade, a skate park, and more.

If you're looking to head south, give Sun N Fun RV Resort a look. Situated in sunny Sarasota, Florida, Sun N Fun has a climbing wall, mega waterslide, and even a summer kids camp. All across North America, you can find RV resorts that fit your family!

5. Kid-friendly Destinations

We've talked a lot about finding a kid-friendly place to stay. But don't forget about activities outside of the resort. When traveling with kids, it's best to choose a destination with plenty of interesting attractions.

Orlando, Florida, for example, has a multitude of theme parks. And Indian Creek RV & Camping Resort is situated in Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio, a summer paradise. Here are a few roundups of places with kid-friendly attractions:

We hope these tips help you while traveling with kids. And feel free to share this post with other parents. We can all use a little help!
