A Parent's Guide to Traveling with Kids
As any parent can attest, traveling with kids is tricky business. There are a lot of considerations and even if you remember them, things can still go wrong. But there's no doubt that it helps to be prepared. And that's why we're bringing you five tips for traveling with kids. Have fun and enjoy your vacation!
5 Tips for Traveling with Kids
1. Getting There
First things first, you need to look at your mode of travel. If you're driving, make sure you get a maintenance check before hitting the road. No parent wants to be stuck on the side of the road when traveling with kids.
If you're flying, there are more considerations. For one, make sure you pack according to the airline restrictions. That means no liquids greater than three ounces, and they must fit in a one-quart bag for each traveler. Additionally, you'll need to check your luggage weight, the carry-on rules, and the security guidelines. And that's on top of keeping kids calm during the flight!
In some cases, you might be able to take a train. This takes longer than flying but removes most of the stress. You'll have more space to spread out, fewer packing restrictions, and no security lines. See if you can take an Amtrak train on your next trip!
2. What to Pack
Packing might be the most important part of the trip. If you forget an essential item, traveling with kids can be a hairy situation. It's wise to plan a packing list at least three days in advance. Write this out and check items off as you pack. Using this list rather than relying on memory will save you strife.
What are some things you might pack for traveling with kids? Here's a very abbreviated list:
- Clothing, including swimwear
- Toiletries and medication
- Healthy snacks
- Reusable water bottles
- Travel pillow(s)
- Sweaters, hoodies, or light jackets
- Headphones
- Tablet with pre-downloaded movies, books, or games

3. Tent, RV, or Vacation Rental
An important question is which way you'll choose to stay. Tents offer an experience under the stars but aren't always the best for camping with kids. If you opt for a tent site, make sure your kids have experience with tent camping, like in the backyard, before taking your trip.
RVs are a great way to take the family camping. They offer some of the amenities of home, making it easier for kids to acclimate. They also provide a bit more space and privacy for families.
