Road Trip Through the Best of New Jersey

5 minutes read Jul 19,2022
New Jersey Road Trip

Often overshadowed by New York City, New Jersey is a great state for a road trip and has so much to offer. It features hundreds of miles of beautiful coastline, as well as cities packed with entertainment at every turn.

Explore the Best of New Jersey

If you're considering a road trip adventure soon, put New Jersey at the top of your list. Not sure where to start? We've put together a route with our favorite stops across the Garden State.

Sussex

Start your New Jersey adventure in Sussex, where you can truly escape from it all. This rural town is a little retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Explore sights like High Point State Park, which is home to the highest point in New Jersey or relax in the Wallkill National Wildlife Refuge.

Nearby, you'll find Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm. This family-friendly resort welcomes pets and features unique, farm-inspired amenities that include hayrides, cow milking, and an animal petting area. There are also traditional favorites like an outdoor pool, playground and so much more.

Atlantic City

Next up on your New Jersey getaway: Atlantic City. Sure, it's known as a gambling town, but there's plenty to do beyond the casinos. That being said, if gaming is up your alley, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City and Bally's Atlantic City Casino & Resort are two spots you don't want to miss.

If you want to fit some shopping in, the Quarter at Tropicana has more than 40 stores to choose from in a setting themed like Old Havana. It's a truly a unique shopping experience that you have to try at least once in your life.

Last, but not least, you can enjoy Atlantic City's boardwalk and soak in some sun with gorgeous ocean views.

Shady Pines MH and RV Resort has an ideal location that's close by so you can spend the day in Atlantic City and escape to a more secluded retreat when you're ready to relax. This all-age resort is pet-friendly and has close to 100 sites to choose from and a selection of on-site amenities to enjoy.

Ocean City

Ocean City is the next stop on your road trip along the Jersey Shore. This seaside locale has more than 100 shops, bars, and restaurants all within city limits. In fact, many of them are close to, or on, the coast. Explore the Ocean City Boardwalk, one of the main attractions in the area and the whole family can enjoy the boardwalk's Ferris wheel and amusement park.

To enjoy a very special treat, visit Fralinger's Original Salt Water Taffy & Fudge. This establishment has been serving up sweets of all kinds for more than 125 years.

If you're looking for a place to stay, you can't go wrong with Sun Retreats Avalon or Sun Retreats Sea Isle. Both resorts are a short drive from Ocean City center and offer a scenic escape from it all. In fact, Sun Retreats Sea Isle has its own private lake so you can relax near the water in more ways than one.

Cape May

End your New Jersey road trip in the beautiful, coastal town of Cape May. As one of America's oldest seaside towns, Cape May is packed with history and fun around every corner. You could spend weeks here and still not see it all, but there are a few things you shouldn't miss. Here's a quick rundown of the best things to do in this historic town.

Historic Sites & Naval Attractions

The town of Cape May has rich Victorian history and there are dozens of sightseeing tours that'll show you around town. It also features a number of naval attractions to explore, including the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum, for any military enthusiasts.

Whale Watching

Cape May is home to the Cape May Whale Watch & Research Center, which offers marine life sightseeing tours of all kinds. Catch a cruise and see whales, dolphins, and a variety of sea life.

Golfingde

If you love to hit the links, Cape May is home to dozens of golf courses. Some courses are even seaside for an extra special day on the green. Plan a few rounds using our recommendation on the best golf courses in Cape May.

Cape May-Lewes Ferry

Located at the tip of the Jersey Shore, Cape May is incredibly close to Delaware. And the Cape May-Lewes Ferry connects the two states while offering travelers a scenic, 85-minute cruise in the Atlantic Ocean. If you reach the end of your trip and decide you're up for more adventure, take your leave in Delaware for another truly unique experience.

Breweries

There are also dozens of breweries scattered throughout Cape May and the surrounding area if you love beer. Each one has its own special setting so make sure you check out a few during your stay. We recommend Gusto Brewing Company on the west side of Cape May. It's highly rated and has an outstanding selection of delicious brews.

Once you finish your daily adventures, you're going to need a place to hang your hat for the night. There are several great options in the area including Sun Retreats Cape May, Sun Outdoors Cape May, and Sun Retreats Cape May Wildwood. Each resort offers an excellent selection of amenities to enjoy while you rest, relax and recharge. All are within minutes of the very best Cape May has to offer.

We hope these amazing destinations have inspired you to plan you next road trip adventure in New Jersey. Feel free to share this post with family and friends who may also love visiting new and interesting places along the open road.
