No campout or camping trip is complete without a campfire, especially when you're using that fire to cook your meals, or some ooey gooey s'mores! Often you can use small sticks and twigs to kindle wood into a campfire, but sometimes you run out of usable materials or encounter the age-old scenario of rain-soaked wood. If that's the case, there are plenty of everyday items that you will likely have at your campsite to help you out in a pinch.
Next time you're in search of kindling, try these neat tricks with household items to help kindle your next campfire!
Birthday Candle
Birthday candles are lightweight, easy to ignite, and take up very little space! As a bonus, you can use birthday candles multiple times, a handy feature when you want something that will last longer than a leaf or bundle of sticks. If you happen to have them, trick birthday candles are an even better tool, as they will reignite themselves if blown out by the wind.
Dryer Lint
Save up your dryer lint for easy kindling that doesn't cost a thing. This stray fuzz makes great kindling and creates a large enough flame to ignite other fire starters!
Snack Food
This may not be your first thought, but many different types of junk food, including Pringles and Cheetos, can serve as kindling. Though these can occasionally be finicky to ignite, junk foods will burn for a long time and are easily available. Just make sure to properly dispose of the bags and wrappers, as these are not suitable for burning.
Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly
Rub Vaseline into cotton balls for kindling that's easy to ignite and lasts long enough for your flames to become steady and roaring! These simple concoctions can be stored in a baggie or canister for future use.
Pine Cones
Pine cones may be wooden, but they are so abundant that the needles and core make great kindling and tinder. The pine sap ignites with ease, while the woody core provides enough material to keep burning long enough for larger sticks and logs begin to catch fire. Take a walk around your campsite and do some hunting, you're sure to find plenty of these natural kindlers!
