The leaves they are a-changin'! Autumn is in the air and this season is a great time to get outdoors. But at the same time, it can be easy to overindulge in comfort food as the weather turns cooler. To help you stay well this autumn, we're highlighting eight healthy fall activities. Join us as we celebrate the season in good health!
Fall is a great time to get out and run. Many 5Ks, 10Ks, and even marathons are scheduled during the season. But don't worry about enrolling in an official event. You can map out and run your own 5K route. Even better, train with a friend and run together through the colorful fall foliage!
Not every healthy fall activity revolves around exercise. Sometimes it's just about enjoying the fruits, or in this case vegetables, of the season. Autumnal vegetables like onions, squash, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, and broccoli are all excellent for roasting. All you need to do is cut them in roughly equal pieces, drizzle them with a bit of vegetable oil, sprinkle some seasoning, and roast them on a baking sheet at 400-425 degrees F for 20-30 minutes until cooked through. Then, voila! You have a tray of nutritious, roasted veggies to dine on.
As far as cardiovascular exertion goes, a scenic bike ride might rank at the top of healthy fall activities. With the cool weather, it's a great time to get out and ride. Many cities have gorgeous greenways and rail trails that will take you through dense, colorful forests.
Alternatively, you can try mountain biking in autumn. While the adventurous sport will require some skill, it can be a great opportunity to explore the wilderness while staying active.
Plenty of vegetables come into season in autumn, but we can't forget about fall's finest fruit. Apples are an autumnal treasure and it's a favorite tradition to go apple picking. Orchards exist in many parts of the U.S., so you can find one near you. Be sure to check out our tips on apple picking before you go!
Sure, you can search out the best orchards or pumpkin patches. But why not go to a one-stop shop? Your local farmer's market (or one near your camping destination) will have vendors from around the area selling their best goods. You'll be able to find produce of all shapes and sizes, as well as homemade goods. Best of all, you'll support local farmers and artisans!
Autumn may be known as a season for comfort food, but it's easy to stay fit with healthy fall activities. From enjoying the outdoors to eating the season's best produce, there are many ways to be well in autumn. Try some of these ideas and don't forget to share them with your friends and family!
