Camping BBQ Tips and Recipes For The Summer

Warm weather and sunshine means it's time to open up your grill and enjoy barbecue season. Barbecuing is one of our favorite summer pastimes and is easier than you might think. To make barbecuing even faster, we've rounded up some quick BBQ tips for campers.

Quick and convenient meals on the grill will ensure that you make the most of your days outdoors. Many Sun RV resorts provide areas where guests can fire up their grills and cook their favorite summer foods.

Be sure to check with your RV resort regarding grill and fire rules and restrictions.

Now that you're ready for barbecue season, put your grilling skills to the test with these camping BBQ tips!

1. BBQ Ribs

Ribs are a go-to barbecue food that are sure to please every palette at the table. Plus, they taste best when cooked on a grill.
  • Trim the rack of ribs and add your preferred rub to them before cooking. This will ensure a great bark (crispy outside) and lots of flavor.
  • If cooking on a gas grill, add a smoke bomb to the grill. A smoke bomb is wood chips wrapped in tin foil, with holes poked through, allowing for a natural wood smoke flavor.
  • Place the ribs on the grill, loosely wrapped in aluminum foil. This will trap steam, cooking the ribs through and keeping them moist.
  • Try making your own sauce. Combine ketchup, brown sugar, white wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Add the sauce to the ribs once they have been cooked for about 30 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).

2. Grilled Trout

Did you happen to catch a trout while fishing? Here are some tips on how to prepare trout on the grill.
  • Clean freshly caught fish before seasoning.
  • Preheat your grill and lightly oil the grates, then spread oil all over the trout. This will keep it crispy and reduce sticking.
  • Sprinkle sea salt on the outer part of the fish. Rub salt, black pepper, minced garlic, and a sprig of rosemary and thyme into the cavities.
  • Cook trout for 6-7 minutes on each side or until the skin of the fish becomes flakey.
  • Garnish with lemon after cooking to add a pop of zest.
Grilled Pineapple

3. Grilled Pineapple

Time to get tangy with pineapple. Grilling pineapple causes the sugars to caramelize, leading to a delectable treat. Here's how to grill pineapple:
  • Preheat your grill to a medium heat and spread a small amount of oil over the grill.
  • Add brown sugar and cinnamon to a plastic bag along with pineapple slices, then seal and shake the bag.
  • Place the pineapple slices on the grill (on top of aluminum foil), cooking each side for about 3-5 minutes.

4. Vegetable Kebabs

Vegetable kebabs serve as a tasty side for your meal. With so many combinations, the sky is the limit!
  • Try using a combo of summer squash, eggplant, red onion, cherry tomatoes, and red or orange bell pepper. Or create your own combo!
  • Cut up your favorite vegetables into cubed pieces, and put five or six pieces on a skewer.
  • Mix olive oil, basil, oregano, salt, and black pepper in a bowl (quantities based on taste preference), then spread the mixture over the vegetable skewers.
  • Place the skewers on the grill for 10-15 minutes, occasionally turning them.

5. Taco S'mores

To finish off the perfect meal, try out this mess-free version of everyone's favorite campfire snack.
  • Place a soft tortilla shell on a piece of aluminum foil.
  • Spread marshmallow fluff, chocolate chips and graham cracker crumbs on one side of the shell.
  • Add as much as you'd like of each, then wrap the tortilla securely in the foil.
  • Place the wrap over the grill for about 5 minutes, until chocolate and marshmallows are melted and gooey.

If you want to change up your grilling experience, try cooking some of your favorite recipes over a campfire. And be sure to check out the related posts below for more camping recipes.
