Though it's hard to pick favorites, Ontario is certainly among the finest and most beautiful Canadian provinces. With vast forests, major cities, and access to four of the Great Lakes, Ontario has it all. The best part? It's easy to see several of the best spots in a southern Ontario road trip.
The next stop on your Ontario road trip should be Niagara Falls. Drive 30 kilometers north from our campground at Sherkston Shores to this bustling tourist destination. In town, you'll find gift shops, restaurants, and kid-friendly attractions.
In our opinion, the real action happens by the water. On the Canadian side, you'll find Horseshoe Falls, the largest of the three waterfalls in Niagara Falls. Gorgeous viewpoints await you all along the Canadian cliffside, and if you want to get closer, take a trip on one of the Niagara city cruises. These boat tours will take you straight into the mist!
Next stop, Toronto! Canada's largest city is a must-see destination on your Ontario road trip. If you're looking to see Lake Ontario, head to the Toronto Islands. This car-free community is a walkable destination with sandy beaches, splash pads, and Centreville Amusement Park. To reach the islands, take the ferry from Jack Layton Ferry Terminal.
Inside the city, there's much more to see. Standing high above it all is CN Tower, the tallest structure in North America. Take an elevator to the observation deck for unbeatable views of Toronto and Lake Ontario. For more Toronto fun, check out the following attractions:
The final stop on your Ontario road trip leads you roughly 200 kilometers northwest of Toronto to the popular Georgian Bay region. We recommend camping at either of our outdoor destinations at Sun Retreats Blue Mountains or Sun Retreats Arran Lake to establish your homebase.
Once you've settled in, it's time to start exploring! First stop is Inglis Falls, an 18-metre high waterfall in a nature preserve filled with hiking trails. There is also a convenient viewing platform that provides views of the falls, while seven kilometers of trails give you plenty of space to explore.
After you've taken in Inglis Falls, stop in Owen Sound for a bite to eat. You might also stop at Kelso Beach or the Billy Bishop Home & Museum while you're in town.
When you're ready to explore Lake Huron, head north to Bruce Peninsula National Park. Here, you'll discover high cliffs towering over the turquoise waters of the Georgian Bay. For great views, hike the moderate Georgian Bay Trail along the shoreline. You'll pass by sea caves, Fathom Five National Marine Park, and the Grotto, a Mediterranean-style cove.
With your visit to the Bruce Peninsula, you've seen three of the Great Lakes on one Ontario road trip! But the Ontario fun doesn't stop there. There's much more to see. Perhaps head north to Sun Retreats Huntsville near Algonquin Provincial Park. Or head west to Amherstburg and camp at Sun Retreats Amherstburg. Adventure awaits, so pack your bags and start exploring.
Don't keep the fun of an Ontario road trip to yourself. Share this post and invite your friends to explore the province!
