8 Labor Day Activities for the Outdoors

As the unofficial end-of-summer holiday, Labor Day is the last chance to make summer break count. Yet, in contrast to some other holidays that offer expected activities, Labor Day isn't bounded by clear-cut traditions. To spark some ideas for activities, we're here to suggest eight excellent things to do on Labor Day weekend.

Check out our list below for great Labor Day ideas and activities that will satisfy the whole family. If you're staying at one of our outdoor destinations, you'll find several ideas that also feature recommendations for nearby activities. Have fun and enjoy your holiday!

8 Excellent Things to Do on Labor Day

1. Go Paddleboarding

Try paddleboarding and experience a unique way to get on the water. Lakes and rivers are typically warmest in early September, making it a great time to go paddleboarding. If you're worried about balancing, kayaking and canoeing are good alternatives that allow you to sit down.

2. Take a Hike

Venturing out on a hike is one of our favorite things to do on Labor Day. In many places, you'll find that the September weather is a touch cooler than the height of summer. For a few hiking recommendations, check out our posts below:

3. Try a Wine Tasting

The transition period from late summer to autumn is peak season for vineyards across the country. During Labor Day weekend, try visiting a winery or vineyard for a wine tasting. Many of our resorts are near renowned wine regions and you can find a few resorts below with acclaimed wineries nearby.

Petoskey RV Resort

Petoskey RV Resort is located near the varied wine regions of Northern Michigan. We recommend visiting either Walloon Lake Winery or Petoskey Farms Vineyard & Winery.

Cava Robles RV Resort

Located in Paso Robles, California, Cava Robles RV Resort is nestled in the heart of wine country. Try a tasting nearby at Eberle Winery or Croad Vineyards.

Indian Creek RV & Camping Resort

Ohio's Lake Erie coastline lends itself to a unique microclimate for ice wine, a sweet dessert beverage. When you stay at Indian Creek RV & Camping Resort, you can head to Debonné Vineyards to sample ice wine for yourself.

4. Go Camping

It's no surprise that we think camping is one of the best things to do on Labor Day. From rustic tent camping to comfortable RVing, or cozy vacation rentals, there's no better way to take a getaway. Check out our outdoor destinations across the U.S. and southern Ontario, Canada, for your Labor Day getaway.

5. Have a Bonfire

A bonfire is a perfect Labor Day activity. You can gather with friends and family around the flames to swap stories, share laughs, and enjoy s'mores. There's no better way to round out summer than with a bonfire!

6. Make a S'mores Bar

A fantastic idea is to set up a s'mores bar to accompany your bonfire. Put out an array of toppings for people to choose from and let them go wild with their craziest s'more concepts! For a few topping ideas, check our gourmet s'more recipes, which are compiled in an easy-to-read infographic.

7. Go Swimming

Before the water cools down, you should be sure to go for a swim. Whether you're dipping into the freshwater Great Lakes, the mighty Atlantic Ocean, or the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, you'll find that swimming is an excellent activity for Labor Day.

8. Head on a Bike Ride

Rounding out our list is a suggestion to hop on your bike and go cycling. If you have a favorite trail that you like to traverse, Labor Day is an excellent opportunity to take a long ride. Additionally, if you're staying with us as a guest, check out these top-notch bike paths near our resorts:
