10 Halloween Safety Tips

10 Halloween Safety Tips
The annual tradition of masquerading around neighborhoods at night in search of treats is almost upon us, so we've put together 10 Halloween safety tips to keep in mind. Candy, costumes, and creepy decorations lead to plenty of fun, but we need to remain mindful and avoid any potential risks to get everyone home safe and sound.

Halloween Safety Tips

1. Map Out Your Route

Take some time beforehand to map out your route. Stick to main roads and well-lit residential areas, avoiding alleys and shortcuts. Remember to always be mindful of your surroundings, especially around any major street crossings!

2. Wear Bright or Reflective Clothing

Because most trick-or-treating happens at dark, make sure your child's costume is bright or features something reflective. You want them to be highly visible to motor traffic. Even a couple strips of reflective tape on their costume or trick-or-treat bag should get the job done.

3. Test Makeup Beforehand

If you're planning to use face paint or other makeup, test it beforehand. The last thing you want is to discover a reaction before heading out for the festivities.

4. Trick-or-treat During Daylight Hours

Try to trick-or-treat during daylight hours, especially with younger children. Depending on where you live, the sun may set quite early. Finishing your trick-or-treating before dusk is much safer than walking in the dark, even when you're taking precautions.

5. An Adult Should Always Be Supervising

Kids should never be allowed to trick-or-treat alone! At least one responsible adult should be supervising every group. If your child is joining a group, check to make sure that a parent will be going along.

6. Kids Should Never Enter Strangers' Homes

Make sure your child knows that they are not to enter strangers' homes. Even if you've spoken to your kids about the possible dangers with strangers, it never hurts to give them a gentle reminder to keep your Halloween safe and fun.

7. Inspect All Treats Before Eating

Check treats to ensure that they haven't been opened or tampered with before eating. Wait until you've gone home and inspected your kid's candy before they start to dig in.

8. Avoid Homemade Treats from Strangers

Stick to factory-wrapped candies and goods. Homemade treats should be discarded unless they come from a trusted source.

9. Be Cautious Around Candles

While flameless candles are increasingly popular, watch out for real candles in Halloween decorations. Long and trailing costumes can easily touch the flame and ignite.

10. Never Leave Your Home Unattended

Never leave your home unattended on Halloween. Always keep a few lights on inside the house and be sure that your doors are locked.

By utilizing these 10 tips, you can have a safe and successful Halloween. Don't forget to check out Halloween events happening at select Sun RV resorts around the nation.
