How to Grow an Indoor Vegetable Garden

Green vegetables growing in white pots on window sill

During the summer, many campers enjoy visiting local farmers markets to purchase fresh produce. But outside of a few warm locales, that's not an option during winter. As such, you may be looking for a good way to get fresh vegetables growing within your home or even your RV! Fortunately, it's not too difficult to create an indoor vegetable garden. We cover the steps below and recommend some easy starter kits to try. Check them out and good luck gardening!

Indoor Gardens

Spinach

Spinach is quite easy to grow on a sunny sill. You can plant spinach in a pot, but it needs to be well-drained. You should use a self-draining pot filled with indoor potting mix. That combo will allow the roots to avoid excess moisture, giving you great, crispy spinach leaves up top.

Scallions

Scallions might be the easiest addition to an indoor vegetable garden. You can plant the onion bulbs in a pot or gardening tray with indoor potting mix. Then, simply find a semi-sunny pot and water regularly. It won't be too long before scallions begin popping up!

Radishes

Radishes have a reputation for being easy to grow. They also require less light than most vegetables, so they're good if you have north-facing windows. Do note, however, that you'll need deep containers for radishes. They are root vegetables, so you need plenty of space under the soil for the bulbs.

Great Indoor Vegetable Garden Kits

Smart Garden 9

For an easy way to get started, try an indoor vegetable garden kit. While pricey, the Smart Garden 9 is a complete package for an indoor garden. It features its own lights, and you can simultaneously grow leafy greens, herbs, vegetables, fruits, and/or flowers. And with automatic watering technology, care is an absolute breeze.

Back to the Roots Mushroom Farm

Fancy some fungi? You can grow mushrooms out of a box with this organic mushroom farm. With minimal effort, you'll be able to grow oyster mushrooms in just 10 days. You'll get 3-4 servings from each crop, and there are two crops in every box. This might just be the easiest way to start an indoor vegetable garden!

Hydrofarm Hydroponic Salad Garden

Looking to grow all the ingredients for a salad? The Hydrofarm Hydroponic Salad Garden is an easy way to do just that. It should be noted that this is just the hydroponic structure for growing leafy greens. You'll need to purchase young plants from a store or nursery to plant. But once they're started, salad greens will grow 30% faster in this hydroponic garden than in soil. Note that you'll need plenty of light for leafy greens. Make sure you have a very sunny window or invest in some grow lights.

Nutraponics Hydroponic Garden Tower

To grow a variety of vegetables indoors, try the Hydroponic Garden Tower. This is a hydroponic system tower growing system allows for 80 pots.

For fresh produce year-round, try creating your own indoor vegetable garden. But don't embark on this fun project alone. Share this post and recruit a friend to join you in growing an indoor garden!
