Every angler has a dream to reel in the big one. But that's no easy task! One of the best ways to land a whopper is to know the fishing seasons. To make things easier, we're highlighting the benefits of fall fishing on the Chesapeake Bay.
The autumnal angling season varies a bit, so we've split it into two parts. Read on to learn which time period is best for your fishing desires.
In the Chesapeake Bay, water temperatures start dropping in October. This chill leads to a big shift in the rockfish, or striped bass. These feisty fish come out in swarms to gobble up the bait. With so many swimming around, you're all but guaranteed a good haul!
October has more than just rockfish, though. In this early stage of the fall fishing season, you'll also have a chance at bluefish and white perch. While not quite as common, these fish usually haven't yet encountered cold enough waters to push them out.
The biggest prizes for fall fishing come in November and December. This time of year offers no guarantees, but provides plenty of chances to go big or go home. The resident fish are active and about, while the migratory fish are also in motion. That provides anglers with ample opportunity for a diverse selection of catches!
While some fish in November and December may be small, it's not uncommon to catch a 50 pounder. As far as the types of fish, you'll encounter plenty of striped bass. But there's also a chance of snagging bluefish, especially in November.
