How to Celebrate the 4th of July at Home

We often associate the 4th of July with big crowds watching the fireworks. But it doesn't have to look like that. There are many 4th of July activities to enjoy at home, allowing you to spend quality time with your family.

This year, we're giving you some ideas for celebrating Independence Day in the backyard. Check out the suggestions below and plan a celebration of your own!

4th Of July Chalk Art

4th of July Activities for the Backyard

Patriotic Chalk Art

Turn your driveway into a 4th of July masterpiece! Chalk art is a great way to show your red, white, and blue spirit. Some ideas to try include an American flag, a bald eagle, or, if you're ambitious, chalk art fireworks.

Make a Patriotic Playlist

Need to get into the 4th of July spirit? Try making a patriotic playlist. What that means is up to you! For some, it could mean Americana and folk music. For others, it could be classic rock. Maybe it's even modern pop. Have a little fun and mix up a playlist for your 4th of July festivities.

4th Of July Sparklers

Glowsticks and Sparklers

Glowsticks and sparklers have long been favorite 4th of July activities. Even when celebrating Independence Day at home, you can celebrate in this way. And it's great fun for kids!

For extra entertainment, spell out people's names with sparklers and glowsticks. If you have a camera with manual settings, you can adjust the exposure and capture the effect on film. Here's a tutorial.

Family Yard Games

Looking for a bit of exercise? Get the family together for some outdoor yard games. If you have a big enough space, like a park, you can play soccer or put up a volleyball net. If you're in your backyard, try cornhole, horseshoes, or ladder golf.

Water Balloon Fight

Water Balloon Fight

July can be a hot month for much of the U.S. To cool off, hold a water balloon fight! You can even add a patriotic twist by using red, white, and blue balloons.

As an alternative to water balloons, try squirt guns. These work well but are a bit less soaking.

Watch a Patriotic Movie

On your list of 4th of July activities, don't forget your favorite patriotic movie! Maybe you're a fan of Hamilton and opt to watch that. Or perhaps you like a classic sci-fi flick like Independence Day. There's no wrong movie to watch, so go with your favorite.

4th Of July Grilling

Grill Hot Dogs and Hamburgers

Of all the classic 4th of July activities, grilling out ranks near the top. Enjoy the tradition at home with hamburgers and hot dogs. If you want to amp up the excitement, host a family hot dog eating contest. Alternatively, take things in moderation and grill up some veggies alongside your meats.
