10 Reasons to Love Michigan

Awesome Things to Do in Michigan

Known as the Mitten State, Michigan is filled with fun things to do! National Michigan Day falls on January 18, and we're celebrating our love for the state by rounding up some of our favorite things about Michigan.

Here are 10 great things to do in Michigan during your next vacation:

1. Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island is one of Michigan's most treasured vacation destinations, situated between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.

Besides not having cars (bikes and horses only), the island features historic hotels and scenic sights like Arch Rock. We recommend taking a carriage tour around the island and sampling as much Mackinac Island fudge as you can.

Here's our guide to touring Mackinac Island in one day.

2. Tunnel of Trees/M-119

The state may call it M-119, but Michigan natives know it as the Tunnel of Trees. This scenic drive begins in the town of Harbor Springs and takes you 20 miles north to Cross Village. Its name derives from the dense trees that surround the road as it winds along Lake Michigan, giving it a literal tunnel effect.

Do yourself a favor and spend some time exploring the shops in Harbor Springs before heading out. For an unforgettable experience, visit in early October for peak fall color.

3. Silver Lake Sand Dunes

Spanning 3,000 acres along Lake Michigan and Silver Lake, Silver Lake State Park is known for its magnificent sand dunes. Here, you'll find one of the only sand dunes open to off-road vehicles (ORVs). Enjoy hiking trails and swimming, or rent an ORV and take on the dunes!

4. Brewery Tours

Michigan is widely recognized as a hotspot for some of the best craft breweries in the U.S. If you're up north, visit Short's Brewing Company in Bellaire or Petoskey Brewing. If you're in Western Michigan, take a trip to Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo to visit Founders Brewing Company and Bell's Brewery.

5. ArtPrize

If you're an art lover, you won't want to miss ArtPrize, which has gained world-wide recognition since its debut in 2009. An event unlike any other, ArtPrize covers a three-square-mile district in downtown Grand Rapids with over 160 venues hosting art exhibits. From bridges to bars, art can be found everywhere during this annual festival in late September.

6. Freshwater Beaches

How could we not mention Michigan's famous freshwater beaches? With four of the Great Lakes bordering the upper and lower peninsulas, there are plenty of opportunities for swimming and strolling along sandy beaches. Plus, you can catch gorgeous sunsets reflecting on the waters of Lake Michigan.

Some of our favorite beaches can be found at Petoskey State Park, Ludington State Park, and Young State Park.

An interesting phenomenon in Northwestern Michigan creates distinct microclimates that closely resemble Mediterranean climates. As a result, Michigan churns out some of the best wines in the U.S., including unique cherry wines.
