How to Spend 5 Days in Maine

Maine is packed with beautiful, sprawling landscapes and miles of gorgeous coastline ready for exploration. It's also home to some of the best entertainment and dining in the country.

Whether you're planning your next adventure with friends, or booking a fun family trip, Maine should be at the top of your list when it comes to vacation spots. Here's how to make the most of your Maine getaway in five exciting days.

Plan Your Maine Vacation in 5 Stops

  1. Old Orchard Beach and Pier

Old Orchard Beach and Pier is stop number one on your Maine vacation. This small coastal town is home to a 7-mile sandy beach where you can spend the day relaxing or swimming in Saco Bay. You can even rent kayaks or jet skis nearby if you're up for a little adventure.

Once you've had your fun on the beach, it's time to explore The Pier. This hot spot is packed with restaurants, bars and entertainment. Old Orchard Beach may only have 8,000 residents, but there's plenty to see and do in this summer vacation destination during your visit. And it's a great way to spend your first day in The Pine Tree State.

  1. Funtown Splashtown USA

Day two centers around Funtown Splashtown USA. This water and amusement park has been a Maine staple since 1967 and is located just northwest of Old Orchard Beach in the city of Saco. The water park has nine water slides, a family fun lagoon, a pirate-themed playscape, and a giant swimming pool.

The amusement park also has a variety of thrill rides, family rides, and kiddie rides. There are roller coasters, a log flume, and Funtown USA's star attraction: Astrosphere. This one-of-a-kind attraction combines the scrambler with a light and sound experience under a giant concrete dome.

There's a reason why people from all over visit Funtown Splashtown USA, and with so much entertainment to choose from, you're sure to keep the whole family happy.

Sebago Lake in Maine
  1. Sebago Lake

On day three you'll want to get an early start to head north about an hour and a half for a visit at Maine's beautiful Sebago Lake. At 45 square miles, Sebago Lake is the second largest lake in Maine. It's also the deepest lake in Maine with almost a trillion gallons of crystal-clear water. The sheer surface area alone provides plenty of space for the thousands of visitors who flock to Sebago Lake each year.

If you want to fish or simply enjoy the lake by boat, you can bring your own vessel or rent from one of the many vendors in town. Fishermen will be excited to know the lake is home to largemouth and smallmouth bass, brook trout, black crappie, as well as white and yellow perch.

You can also rent kayaks and canoes in the area. Or enjoy a relaxing day by the water on the beach with the family. No matter what you choose, Sebago Lake is a Maine destination you won't forget.

  1. Acadia National Park

Day four requires a three-hour drive northeast, but it's more than worth it for what's waiting on the other end. Just plan to start your day early so you can explore everything Acadia National Park has to offer.

Acadia National Park is one of top 10 most-visited national parks in the U.S. It's packed with 27 miles of historic roads, 158 miles of hiking trails, and plenty of beautiful coastline. Here are some of the things you can do within the park:

  • Bicycling
  • Birdwatching
  • Boating
  • Hiking
  • Stargazing
  • Swimming
  • Tidepooling
  • Touring historic structures

No matter which activities you choose, you're sure to have an unforgettable time. Acadia National Park is truly one of the best things to do in Maine.

Lobster Roll Maine Style

  1. Portland, Maine

On your final day in Maine, you can rest and relax in one of Maine's most popular cities: Portland. This beautiful and eclectic city is full of things to do. It's also home to world-class dining and craft beer with the ever-popular Allagash Brewing in town.

All that being said, there are a few things you must do while in Portland. Track down a lobster roll to experience fresh Maine lobster. It's easy to do with dozens of restaurants specializing in serving the fresh catch. And if you're in Maine between mid-April and October, you can book a whale watching tour from one of the local tours in town. You'll be on the lookout for whales, but you just might spot a few dolphins or sea turtles along the way.

Portland is the perfect place to end your Maine vacation and wrap up your five days in Maine.
